Knoville Museum Of Art

Architect:  McCarty Holsaple McCarty Architects

Location: Knoxville, TN

Project: KMA envisioned enhancing their gallery, with a significant emphasis on upgrading the lighting and control systems for their permanent collection. We worked to modernizing the lighting and controls to ensure maximum flexibility while adhering to a predefined budget.

The design team was challenged to work strategically within the constraints of the existing mechanical system's diffuser location, carefully placing the recessed track around the perimeter of each gallery. To streamline the control system, we opted for on-board dimming for each track head. This choice ensures a low-tech, future-proof system that allows precise adjustments down to the closest tenth of a footcandle. This level of sensitivity is crucial as art collections rotate. A field of adjustable downlights provide a quiet ceiling and balanced guest experience.

Higher Ground, the KMA’s flagship permanent exhibition celebrating the richness and diversity of East Tennessee’s visual culture, was reimagined in the museum’s newly renovated entrance level galleries in the fall of 2023.

The exhibition and accompanying 300 page catalog are organized into broad thematic sections that follow the period of Knoxville’s development into a vital commercial and cultural hub, from the emergence of the first professional arts community to the establishment of the area’s first major arts institutions.” To learn more about this collection please visit.
