Loghaven Artist Residency Campus Lighting

Owner:  Aslan Foundation

Location:  Knoxville, TN

Project: The 90-acre wooded site serves as a tranquil haven, hosting artists in a multi-week retreat-style program. However, the pedestrian paths connecting the historic log cabins to the studios and gathering spaces have remained unlit, posing challenges for wayfinding and security during darker hours. Our team took up the task of designing a thoughtful lighting system that strikes a delicate balance – maintaining appropriate light levels for the serene environment while enhancing navigation and providing a sense of safety for all users.

To achieve this, we envisioned a catenary system along the wooded path, ingeniously supported by a combination of existing trees and strategically placed new poles. This elegant installation artfully weaves through the lush canopy, creating an enchanting visual experience while effectively illuminating the way for artists on their journey.

In addition to the catenary system, the main drive benefits from a clever arrangement of luminaires. The existing tree trunks themselves serve as sturdy supports for aimable, full-cut-off luminaires, ensuring the pathway remains brilliantly lit without causing any light pollution or glare.

The result of this sensitive design is a harmonious blend of natural beauty and practicality. As artists wander along the illuminated paths, they will feel connected to nature while experiencing a heightened sense of security and direction. Our lighting solution truly accentuates the site's charm and purpose, fostering an inspiring and safe haven for creativity to flourish.
